Understanding What It Means to Be a Muslim
1. Introduction: The Nature of Faith
After gaining knowledge, I realized that I am a Muslim because I was born into a Muslim family. This does not mean I recognized God immediately; rather, I learned about my identity as a Muslim. This is a common experience in many families across various communities.
2. Self-Reflection: Am I Really a Muslim?
Before claiming the title of a Muslim, I ask myself: Am I truly a Muslim?
3. The Conditions of Being a Muslim
Being a Muslim involves more than simply memorizing or reciting the Kalima. The proof of this lies in our liberation war; many non-Muslims memorized the Kalima to escape from the Paki invaders, while some who are recognized as Muslims may not even have the Kalima memorized. So, what are the actual conditions to be considered a Muslim?
4. The Teachings of Rasulullah (s.a.w.)
I believe that Rasulullah (s.a.w.) has laid out a simple path to becoming a Muslim. In his farewell Hajj speech, he said, “I leave two things for you: Allah's Qur'an and my life (Sunnah).” By following this path, the teachings of the Qur'an become clear.
5. Surah Fatiha: The Path of Guidance
Surah Fatiha, found at the beginning of the Quran compiled by Hazrat Usman (RA), states, “Guide us along the Straight Path, the Path of those You have blessed—not those You are displeased with, or those who are astray.” Thus, Muslims strive to guide themselves on the straight path, avoiding actions that displease Allah.
6. Understanding the Quran
The second Surah (Surah Baqarah) of the Holy Quran begins with, “Alif-Lãm-Mĩm. This is the Book! There is no doubt about it—a guide for those mindful of Allah, who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and donate from what We have provided for them.” The word "muttaki" can be translated as "mindful of God," "devout," "pious," or "God-fearing."
7. Belief in the Unseen
To believe in the unseen means accepting that Allah has explained His own conditions. Absolute belief in this great void is the first condition of becoming a Muslim. The next aspect is prayer. Salat refers to praying regularly five times a day. Regular prayers are essential for a true Muslim.
8. The Importance of Charity and Belief
Allah says, "They spend from what I give them." To become a Muslim, it is necessary to abandon greed. Belief must also extend to all heavenly books, including the Qur'an, which requires faith in all prophets and messengers, as well as the afterlife. Allah warns us that our present actions will be accounted for in the Hereafter.
9. Levels of Faith (Iman)
In Islam, there are three levels of faith:
- Belief in the heart
- Acknowledgment
- Observation
To become a Muslim, one must sincerely believe in the oneness of Allah, the prophets and messengers, the heavenly books, the afterlife, and all related matters. This belief must be acknowledged and acted upon through prayers, fasting, Hajj, and Zakat.
10. The Dangers of Greed
Greed is often the root of all sins. People lie, kill, and exploit others due to greed.
11. The Unique Status of Humanity
Before creating man, Allah said to the angels, "I will send My representative to the world." This demonstrates why man is called Ashraful Makhlukat, the best of creation. Humans are sent to balance the cycle of creation, though not all fulfill this purpose.
12. The Misconception of Non-Practicing Muslims
A popular saying today distinguishes between "practicing Muslims" and "non-practicing Muslims." However, a true Muslim believes in Allah and lives according to His instructions, making the distinction unnecessary.
13. Conclusion: Questions of Integrity
Recently, it has been reported that the name of the Chief Advisor of the interim government has been added to the list of influential Muslims in the world. How is that possible? A review of the above discussion and his biography will certainly raise questions about this, and it is normal to ask those questions. How can the modern form of interest, which is prohibited in Islam, be associated with someone considered a Muslim?
