Something Feels Off: A Discomfort Beyond Grief

The passing of Matia Chowdhury, a respected freedom fighter, Member of Parliament, Deputy Leader of the Parliament, and minister, has left many with a deep sense of unease. Her departure has not only evoked sadness but also raised questions that disturb and perplex. Something feels fundamentally wrong, and this sense of discomfort demands attention. Why did it happen this way?

Matia Chowdhury: A Life of Service and Honor

Matia Chowdhury, often called the "Daughter of Fire," was a distinguished freedom fighter and a seasoned politician in Bangladesh. She played an active role during the Liberation War of 1971, contributing to the independence movement with her resolute spirit and fearless advocacy for freedom. Her activism began early, as she was involved in student politics during the 1960s, which was marked by her active participation in the struggle against the then-Pakistani regime.

After the independence of Bangladesh, Matia Chowdhury joined the Awami League, the party that led the nation to freedom under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Over the decades, she established herself as a staunch advocate for democracy, social justice, and the welfare of the underprivileged. Known for her fiery speeches, she earned the nickname "Daughter of Fire," reflecting her passionate and bold stance on various issues.

Throughout her political career, Matia held numerous important positions. She served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for several terms, representing the Sherpur-2 constituency, and became a trusted and respected leader within the Awami League. Appointed as the Minister of Agriculture, she implemented significant policies to support farmers and advance Bangladesh's agricultural sector. Her efforts helped improve food security and uplift rural communities, making her a beloved figure among the grassroots.

In 2018, Matia Chowdhury was appointed the Deputy Leader of the Parliament, a role that underscored her importance within the Awami League and the country's political landscape. She remained vocal about issues of national interest, always advocating for the principles enshrined in the country's Constitution, which were secured through the Liberation War.

Her dedication, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the nation made her an iconic figure in Bangladesh’s political history. Matia's contributions extended beyond politics, as she was also an advocate for women's empowerment, social justice, and the promotion of education. Throughout her life, she remained true to her principles, always prioritizing the welfare of her country and its people over personal gain.

Deprived of Due Honors: What Went Wrong?

Given her illustrious career and lifelong dedication to Bangladesh, it was expected that Matia Chowdhury would be accorded the highest honors upon her passing, as befits a national hero and a revered leader. However, the manner in which her last rites were handled has been a source of controversy and dismay. Several significant breaches of tradition and respect have caused widespread concern:

  1. No Guard of Honor: Matia Chowdhury was a freedom fighter, a title that carries immense respect in Bangladesh. Traditionally, a guard of honor is provided to those who fought for the country's independence, as a final tribute to their sacrifice and service. Shockingly, this honor was not extended to Matia. Such a breach of protocol is not only disrespectful but also a disservice to the legacy of all freedom fighters. The absence of this honor raises questions about why a woman who gave so much for the country's liberation was denied this fundamental recognition.

  2. Absence of Funeral Ceremony in the National Parliament: As a long-serving Member of Parliament and the Deputy Leader of the Parliament, it was customary for Matia Chowdhury’s funeral to be held at the National Parliament premises. This is a mark of respect given to parliamentarians who have contributed significantly to the country’s governance. However, her funeral did not take place there, which was a deviation from established norms. The decision not to hold the ceremony at the Parliament has left many questioning why she was not accorded this honor, which is typically reserved for esteemed political figures.

  3. Denial of a Burial Plot: Perhaps the most distressing element of this situation was the denial of a burial plot for Matia Chowdhury by the Chief Advisor's office. This decision has been seen as a grave insult, denying her the dignity she deserved even in death. Throughout her life, Matia fought for the rights of the underprivileged and stood up against injustice. To deny her a final resting place in recognition of her contributions is a deeply troubling act that has sparked outrage and disappointment among her supporters and the wider public.

Who is Responsible and Why?

The actions surrounding Matia Chowdhury's final journey have led to a series of uncomfortable questions. Who made the decision to withhold these honors, and what was the rationale behind it? Was this an oversight, or was there a deliberate intention to deprive her of the respect she deserved? These questions demand answers, as the public seeks to understand why someone of her stature was treated in such a manner.

Beyond the immediate actions, there is a need to address a broader concern: Who are the individuals responsible for these dishonorable actions, and why were they allowed to act in a way that disrespects not only Matia Chowdhury but also the principles she stood for? This situation points to deeper issues within the system that need to be confronted to ensure that the legacy of freedom fighters and respected leaders is honored appropriately.

Prayers for the "Daughter of Fire"

As we reflect on these troubling circumstances, it is essential to remember Matia Chowdhury for her strength, integrity, and the life she led in service to Bangladesh. Her contributions to the nation’s independence, her efforts to uplift the marginalized, and her leadership in Parliament will continue to inspire future generations.

We pray for the eternal peace of her soul and hope that her legacy will shine brightly, despite the unfortunate actions that surrounded her final journey. May she rest in peace. Joy Bangla.
