The Prothom Alo Pattern

Prothom Alo, one of Bangladesh's leading newspapers, has been at the center of recent events that have sparked widespread unrest and violence. This piece delves into a recurring pattern observed in their reporting, particularly during clashes involving student movements. It raises questions about the role of media in shaping public perception and its potential connections with political conspiracies. As protests intensify, understanding these patterns becomes crucial in deciphering the underlying motivations and agendas at play.

Event 1: On July 15, Prothom Alo published a report titled, "How the Clash Started at Dhaka University." According to the report, rumors spread on the DU campus that some protesting students were confined at Ziaur Rahman Hall by members of the Chhatra League. This rumor quickly gained traction on social media, creating a tense atmosphere. Announcements were made over loudspeakers, further inciting students by falsely claiming that protesters were being held. The students then stormed Ziaur Rahman Hall, only to find it empty. Enraged, they moved to attack Vijay Ekattor Hall, launching stones, bricks, and shoes at Chhatra League members positioned on different floors of the building. The situation escalated, culminating in a violent clash in the hall's garden.

Event 2: This pattern repeated itself on August 26, 2024. Hasnat Abdullah posted on Facebook, alleging that protesters had confined them. At the time of his post, there was no visible conflict near the Secretariat area, yet his message sowed panic across social media and the university campus. In response, a mob advanced toward the Secretariat, leading to a clash with the Ansar forces stationed there.

A similar tactic was observed during the attack on the Supreme Court. The sequence of events seems orchestrated: a rumor is spread, emotions are inflamed, and violent confrontations follow. This raises a critical question—are those frequently portrayed as students in these reports truly ordinary students, or is there a deeper political alignment at work? How many among the current anti-discrimination activists genuinely lack political affiliations? Or are the coordinators covertly collaborating with groups like Chhatra Dal, Shibir, and Hizbut Tahrir, all while masquerading as independent student activists?

Prothom Alo's Role and Allegations

Prothom Alo is not just a newspaper; it is a powerful entity with the potential to shape public opinion and influence national events. Allegations have surfaced suggesting that the Prothom Alo group is deeply involved in a broader conspiracy to depoliticize the governance of Bangladesh. Their involvement in the so-called anti-discrimination student movement in July and August, along with their perceived role in pushing for an unconstitutional government following the tenure of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League, points to a deliberate attempt to destabilize the existing political order.

Prothom Alo's repeated involvement in such events is not mere coincidence. By consistently publishing reports that ignite unrest, they appear to be playing a calculated role in manipulating public sentiment and guiding the narrative in a direction that benefits certain political agendas. The question then arises: are these actions aligned with journalistic integrity, or do they signify something far more sinister?

The pattern of misinformation, incitement, and subsequent violence observed in the actions surrounding Prothom Alo’s reports is alarming. It is not just about the media’s role in covering events—it is about the potential manipulation of information to serve hidden agendas. As citizens, we must scrutinize the sources of our information and question the motivations behind the narratives being pushed. If media outlets continue to engage in actions that undermine the stability and political integrity of Bangladesh, they risk not just their credibility but also the future of the nation.

The recurring involvement of Prothom Alo in such incidents suggests that they are not merely observers but active participants in a broader scheme. The responsibility now lies with the public to remain vigilant, critical, and discerning in their consumption of news and to demand accountability from those who wield influence over the truth.
